The Catholic Church was the most powerful group of people as everyone was a Christian.

If you weren't, you generally died horribly, such as the Jews in Spain.
They created the Crusades.

there's no medieval west without Christianity and we can say there's no west without it. It all began with emperor Constantine and shaped our culture.
